Denver Firewood FAQ
At Denver Firewood, we want to make sure you have the right information for heating your home safely and efficiently. Here are the most common questions our customers ask;
What is the best type of firewood for heating my home?
For long, steady burns and maximum heat, woods like oak and our hardwood mix are ideal. Softwoods like pine and spruce light quickly and make excellent kindling but burn faster. Many of our customers use softwoods to start a fire and switch to hardwoods for overnight or all-day heating.
 How should I store my firewood?
Store your firewood off the ground on pallets or a rack, with good airflow. Cover the top to keep out rain and snow, but leave the sides open so the wood can breathe and dry properly. Proper storage ensures your wood stays seasoned and ready to burn.

How long does firewood need to season?
Firewood typically needs 6–12 months of air-drying to season fully. Seasoned wood burns hotter, cleaner, and creates less creosote buildup in your chimney.

How do I know if my firewood is seasoned?
Look for these signs:Lighter weight compared to fresh-cut logs, Visible cracks on the ends, Hollow “clunk” sound when two pieces are struck together, Burns easily with less smoke. You can also use a moisture meter to check the moisture content, seasoned wood is 20% or less.
What are the dimensions of a cord of firewood?
A full cord is a tightly stacked pile measuring:4 feet high x 4 feet deep x 8 feet long (128 cubic feet of wood).Firewood is sometimes sold in face cords (or ricks), which measure 4 feet high x 8 feet long, but only one log deep (usually 16–18 inches).
How much firewood will I need for the winter?
It depends on your home size, insulation, stove efficiency, burning frequency, and the Colorado climate. On average:Small, efficient homes: 1–2 cords, Medium homes: 3–5 cords, Larger or less insulated homes: 6+ cords

What’s the best way to start a fire?
Begin with small, dry kindling or softwood to get the flame going. (We recommend our kindling bundle) Once established, add larger pieces of hardwood. Avoid lighter fluid, treated wood, or household trash—these can release harmful chemicals.

How often should I clean my chimney?
We recommend cleaning your chimney at least once a year, or more often if you burn large amounts of wood. Regular cleaning prevents chimney fires and keeps your system running efficiently.
